Litzman: Budget for SMA drug found

Health Minister Yaakov Litzman has told the Finance Committee that he has instructed all hospitals to provide a drug developed to provide an immediate response to spinal muscular atrophy to all the serious patients suffering from the disease, about 12 to 15 children.

Also called autosomal recessive proximal spinal muscular atrophy and 5q spinal muscular atrophy, SMA is a rare neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive muscle wasting, which often leads to early death. Litzman's announcement followed the Finance Committee's discussion on the matter last week. He added that for the rest of the children, he is working to provide a response to every patient who needs the drug.
