Following the Supreme Court's decision to allow the opening of supermarkets in Tel Aviv on the Jewish Sabbath, the coalition is formulating a "status quo" law that will prevent all local authorities from changing existing municipal bylaws on opening businesses on Shabbat, according to Israel Hayom.
If the new law is approved, it will not be possible to return to the previous situation in Tel Aviv where the supermarkets were closed, since the law can not be enforced retroactively. The haredi-religious factions are still debating whether to support the bill.
