Police sources told Channel 2 that suspicions of impropriety by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and his wife Yaffa have increased recently.
A senior member of the enforcement system claimed that developments in the investigation corroborate police suspicions against the couple.
"The main issue is one of purity of motives," the source said. "These are serious allegations: Significant withdrawals of funds from Yaffa Deri's welfare associations for relatives and close associates of the minister."
The source added that "nobody understands where the money went and for what. It is however clear that large sums were withdrawn and not for the purposes the associations were established for."
The minister is suspected of tax offences as well as breach of trust and fraud and he has been interrogated a number of times in recent months. His wife was also interrogated over involvement in the associations she heads.
