Environment and Jerusalem Affairs Minister Zeev Elkin described in an Arutz Sheva interview his plan to detach two Arab neighborhoods from Jerusalem and establish an independent authority.
The new authority will be under Israeli jurisdiction and this will enable 120,000 people living behind the wall to receive proper municipal facilities and it will not be a no-mans-land with unfettered construction and criminal activity.
Elkin said that there is a demographic issue involved, since 60,000 people from the PA have moved into these Jerusalem areas. Israel is obligated by law to improve conditions in the region but this only leads to more migration which threatens the Jewish majority in Jerusalem.
