A GSS announcement stated that Youssef Haled Mustafa Kamil and Mahmed Ziad Abu Alroub had been arrested by the GSS in coordination with the IDF special forces and had been indicted in connection with the murder of Reuven Shmerling on the eve of Sukkot.

The Shmerling family responded by thanking security forces for doing "excellent work and catching the murderers swiftly," according to a report by Kipah.

The family also thanked the prosecution for submitting the indictment swiftly and added that "we are certain that the court will do justice and pray with all out might that our father will be the last Jew murdered because he was Jewish."
