National Union head and Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel responded to the Supreme Court decision allowing opening of Tel Aviv stores on Shabbat.

Ariel said that "the state of Israel is a Jewish and democratic state and the Chief Justice's decision is a precedent for the entire country, is in contravention of halakha and tramples the public Shabbat in the state of Israel. Now I understand more than ever why we pray for the restoration of our judges as before.

"The court's decision follows the outrageous ruling of Chief Justice Naor regarding the Netiv Ha'avot community in Gush Etzion. Ruling without compassion is Sodom-like behavior."
