While Tel Aviv may not be a center of Shabbat observance this Shabbat, some 1,400 cities in more than 94 countries around the world comprising more than a million Jews are expected to keep the coming Shabbat together, in an initiative founded four years ago by South African chief rabbi Warren Goldstein.

The project, initially adopted by 75,000 South African Jews in 2012, has now morphed into a global enterprise which includes public Hallah bakings, public meals and Havdala concerts worldwide, as well as many other joint prayer and study activities.
