Former US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro published an op-ed urging President Trump to move the US embassy to Jerusalem. Trump had made moving the embassy from its current Tel Aviv location a campaign promise but has stalled in implementing it, recently saying in an interview that he "wants to give peace a chance" before he would consider moving it.

Shapiro wrote in the Wall Street Journal that moving the embassy would promote peace between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. According to Shapiro, moving the embassy "reorients U.S. policy toward a two-state solution. Second, it punctures myths that both sides use to deceive themselves and delay progress. Palestinians will see that the U.S. strongly supports historic Jewish and Israeli claims to Jerusalem, and Israelis will hear from their ally that to end the conflict they need to acknowledge a Palestinian state with a capital in East Jerusalem".
