International health organizations are reporting a malaria outbreak in the province of Kyrenia in northern Cyprus.
The region has not suffered from malaria since 1967 and was not on the list of places which require malaria prevention treatment until now.
The Health Ministry is now advising tourists travelling to the region to take anti-malaria treatment before they travel. Tourists are also advised to take steps to prevent mosquito bites such as smearing mosquito repellents and wearing long clothes, as well as closing windows and screens or sleeping with air conditioning.
