There are serious deficiencies in the quality of home care given to 165,000 elderly invalids, deficiencies that sometimes lead to neglect, according to a report by State Comptroller Yosef Shapira on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons in Israel and abroad every year on October 1.
This neglect is particularly grave when it comes to the elderly person who is helpless - who can not provide for his livelihood, health or welfare. The findings indicate the great difficulty of the family members who bear the heavy burden of caring for the elderly. According to the comptroller, the state authorities did not pay due attention to the need to support family members who care for elderly people, and in fact abandoned them and left them to cope with the heavy burden involved in caring for elderly who require care.
