A monument which commemorates the Exodus immigration ship was inaugurated Tuesday in Haifa, exactly 70 years after its heroic voyage.
The ceremony was attended by Housing Minister Yoav Galant, whose mother Fruma arrived in Palestine on the Exodus, as well as Jewish Agency head Natan Sharansky and representatives of the US embassy and the International Christian Embassy. The ceremony was also attended by some of the immigrants who arrived on the ship and their families.
Yoav Galant said at the ceremony that "Exodus symbolized the passage from Holocaust to revival. Nobody would have believed 70 years ago that Israel would become a strong democratic country where everyone wants to live. This happened in the merit of the Exodus." Galant's mother also spoke and said how she remembered seeing Haifa from a distance and said she is proud to have brought up children in Israel.
