Senior Austrian officials announced that the local government intends to place restrictions on passage through its southern border with Italy in order to reduce the amount of migrants entering the country from Italy.
The Italian foreign office responded by saying that it had summoned the Austrian ambassador to talks in an unusual move for two members of the EU.
