The Palestinians have asked the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO to recognize the old city of Hevron and the Cave of the Patriarchs as Palestinian heritage sites when the committee convenes in another two weeks.
The Israeli delegation to UNESCO led by ambassador Carmel Shama-Cohen has begun steps to avert the proposal. Due to the sensitivity of the matter the prime minister is also involved in the efforts to foil the move.
