The Police Chief Rabbi, Rami Berechyahu, has asked senior members of the Rabbinate to enable him to join the Chief Rabbinic Council. At present the council includes rabbis of big cities, the Army Chief Chaplain and other members who are chosen by the Rabbinate's voting body.
Berechyahu wants his status to be similar to that of the Army Chief Chaplain who is an automatic member of the council.
Israel Police responded to the request by stating that "just as the Army Chief Chaplain is a member of the council, the Police Chief Rabbi should also be a member."
