Yediot Ahronot has revealed a letter from attorney Yoram Sheftel, received by military prosecutors last week, which asks attorney Moshe Yisrael to begin negotiations in the case of Elor Azariya the soldier sentenced to 18 months behind bars on a manslaughter conviction for killing a wounded terrorist.
The goal of the negotiations is to try to bring about mutual cancellation of appeals filed by the defense and the prosecution. The hearing on Azaria's appeal was set for May. Sheftel's office said, "Since the Military Advocate General's Office is repeatedly spreading hint in the media that if the appeal is canceled, it will make a dramatic easing of Azaria's punishment, we are waiting for that and are prepared to cancel the appeal on the condition that such a proposal is indeed presented to us."
