Executive Director Roy Lachmanovitz of the Shabbat Equality Coalition (Coalitzia Shabbat Shivion) criticized the government on Sunday for seeking a delay in Supreme Court consideration of Tel Aviv legislation to permit businesses to be open on the Jewish Sabbath. He said that the need to wait for possible unification of Tel Aviv with the city of Bat Yam is throwing sand in the eyes of the general public which does not add respect for anyone.
Calling on the government to take a leadership role, Lachmanovitz said, "Trading on the Sabbath hurts us all - religious and secular, salaried employees and independent business owners. We all deserve a uniform weekly day of rest which can be enforced."
