At least 11 babies died when a fire broke out in Yarmouk Hospital in Baghdad early Wednesday morning, the Iraqi Health Ministry reports.

The babies were in the pre-term birth ward, and died of suffocation, said Ahmed al-Rdainy, a spokeman for the ministry.

Civil Defense investigators think an electrical short circuit caused the fire in the maternity ward.

29 women had given birth at the hospital on Tuesday night, al-Rdainy said. All have been transferred to other hospitals in Baghdad.
