Tuesday marked the 40th anniversary on the Hebrew calendar of the July 4, 1976 rescue by Israel of Israeli and other Jewish hijacking hostages in Entebbe, Uganda. The rescue's official name is Operation Yoni, in memory of Yoni Netanyahu, the brother of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who was killed in a shootout with the hijackers.
Representing the surviving hostages at a memorial service for Yoni at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, Benny Davidson said, "Yoni was killed for us." Drawing inspiration from the quote from the prophet Isaiah on the Liberty Bell in the United States, he said, "Yoni fell in the midst of a campaign that is all about calling for liberty in a far land for all its Israeli and Jewish inhabitants."
