The Kremlin reports that Turkish President Erdogan formally apologized for shooting down Russia's jet in Syria last year. The apology comes as part of Turkey's efforts to rebuild international ties, after her political conflicts with Russia and Israel left her isolated, and with a suffering economy.

Erdogan: "I want to once again express my sympathy and deep condolences to the family of the dead Russian pilot and I say sorry,"

Turkey's presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin: "We are pleased to announce that Turkey and Russia have agreed to take necessary steps without delay to improve bilateral relations."
