Chess giant Viktor Korchnoi has passed away at the age of 85, Associated Press reports.
He was born in the Soviet Union but defected to Switzerland.
Despite spending over 60 years competing on an elite level and his reputation for being one of the greatest chess masters in history, Korchnoi never held the world championship.
He died of an extended illness in Switzerland.
