A confrontation between police and illegal squatters in northern India has left 19 people dead, Associated Press reports. Police say they were trying to remove the residents from government land.
Eleven of the 19 were killed after gas canisters used for cooking exploded. The dead also include two police officers, who reportedly were shot by protesters.
