The far-right Freedom Party appears to have won the first round of Austria's presidential elections, BBC reports.

The party's candidate, Norbert Hofer, received about 36 percent of the vote. While this is a plurality, the country will still need to hold a run-off election next month. He will face two independent candidates, today's second- and third-place winners, for the final decision.

The is the first time that neither of the main parties' candidates reached the run-off since World War II.
