German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that the European Union's economy will be seriously harmed unless it succeeds in protecting its borders.
"If we can't protect our external borders then it could lead to a serious disturbance of our internal market," he said. "Either Europeans protect the external borders or we take a big step backwards."
