Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe has announced his intention to declare the area hit by an earthquake last Thursday as a disaster area.
Such a declaration would allow the government to provide a larger amount of funds for rebuilding the region.
The earthquake left 42 people dead in southern Japan.
