Though Syria is holding parliamentary elections today (Wednesday), France is warning that the effort is merely a "sham" that was planned by "an oppressive regime," Reuters reports.

"France denounces this sham of an election organized by the regime," said a spokesperson for the Ministry. "They are being held without campaigning, under the auspices of an oppressive regime and without international observation."

Instead, France insists that legitimate elections must wait until the country undergoes a political transition and drafts a new constitution.
