The first family of Syrian refugees has arrived in the US from Amman, Associated Press reports. This is the beginning of a "surge operation" to bring over refugees.

The family comes from the city of Homs, but the father didn't find any employment in Jordan and had to get by on food vouchers.

"I'm happy. America is the country of freedom and democracy, there are jobs opportunities, there is good education, and we are looking forward to having a good life over there," the he said.

They are being resettled in Kansas City, Missouri.
