Egyptian legislators and media personnel are claiming that the Muslim Brotherhood is bribing members of the European Union Parliament (EUP) to pressure them into passing a motion against Egypt.
Major General Hamdy Bekheet, who is also a member of the legislature, told the el-Mehwar channel, "The Muslim Brotherhood pays all these people in Europe ... they have influence over all these people."
The bill in question concerns an Italian student who was killed while carrying out research in Egypt. European officials suspect that Egyptian authorities were involved in his torture and death, Associated Press reports. The student, named Giulio Regeni, disappeared on January 25. His body was found nine days later.
The EUP bill says that Regeni's death "is not an isolated incident, but that it occurred within a context of torture, death in custody and enforced disappearances across Egypt in recent years."
