Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has promised to protect foreign embassies and consulates, and to prosecute those who attacked official Saudi facilities.
President Rouhani claimed that the attacks, which hit Saudi Arabia's embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the city of Mashhad, were perpetrated by "extremist individuals."
At the same time, he also rebuked Saudi Arabia for executing the Shi'ite leader Nimr al-Nimr, saying that it violated "human rights and Islamic values." He further blamed the Saudi royal family for encouraging "sectarian policies which have destabilized the region in recent years."
