The European Commission has threatened to revoke Poland's right to vote at the European Council due to the country's new media law, AFP reports.
The law allows the Polish government to directly appoint public broadcasting heads. It has received strong condemnation from rights groups.
The Commission has the ability, through its "Rule of Law mechanism," to punish member countries for what it deems to be threats to the rule of law.
Jean-Claude Juncker, the Commission President, "has placed a first debate on the rule of law in Poland on the agenda of the commission's meeting on January 13."
