Following mediation between the Jerusalem municipality and the Finance Ministry, the Ministry has agreed to immediately transfer about 17 million shekels ($4.4 million US) to pay sanitation workers in the city.
Consequently, the municipality has announced that it will not fire 170 workers. In addition, Histadrut head Avi Nissenkoren, who oversaw the mediation, has called on the Finance Ministry to immediately begin negotiations with Mayor Nir Barkat and the municipality's administration, in order to solve the city's budget problem.
Nissenkoren further expressed his willingness to assist with any issues related to the workers: "All sides must remember that we are talking about the State of Israel's capital, and all it implies. We must strengthen it, as well as the standing of its citizens and workers.
