UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that he is opposed to extending the High Commissioner for Refugee's appointment for another year.
The commissioner, former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, was elected to the position in 2005 and again in 2010. He was scheduled to conclude the role in June, but the General Assembly accepted Ban's recommendation to keep him on until December 31.
Many of the countries that have been receiving refugees from the Middle East have requested that Guterres continue in order to maintain a sense of leadership until the crisis is under control.
