The Pakistani government has ordered that the execution of a paraplegic convict be put on hold, only an hour before it was scheduled to take place.
Abdul Basit, 43, has been confined to a wheelchair for the past five years, after he contracted meningitis while in prison. He was earlier convicted of murdering a man over a financial matter.
It is not yet known if a new date will be set or if Basit's sentence will be changed. If he is executed, it would be the first time that Pakistan has carried out the death penalty against a paraplegic.
