Hamas is negotiating with the Egyptian government in an attempt to stop the latter from flooding its border with Gaza with seawater. Egypt has been doing so in an effort to destroy smuggling and terror tunnels between Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula.
A Hamas spokesperson says that the Egyptian plans to create a water barrier are a danger to Palestinian homes and the local aquifer.
The Palestinian Water Authority claims that the water being used has caused the ground to collapse and brought in so much salt that it can no longer be used for agriculture.
