UN Commissioner Condemns France for Roma Evictions

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, has criticized France for its "systematic national policy" to evict Roma.

Two weeks ago over 150 people were kicked out of their homes in a Parisian suburb. According to al-Hussein, the evictions did not include a 24-hour warning and many of the former resident are now homeless.

He added that the poor treatment of Roma "simply exacerbates entrenched popular discrimination against what is already one of Europe's most deprived and marginalised communities."

Roma, derogatorily known as gypsies, say that they continue to face discrimination throughout Europe.
