The name of the tallest mountain in North America will revert from Mount McKinley to Denali during US President Barack Obama's upcoming trip to the Alaskan site.

Denali is the original Native American name for the mountain, and has been commonly used by Alaskans and climbers for decades. Alaska has tried to change the name in the past, but the move was blocked by the state of Ohio, which was home to President William McKinley.

The move has been welcomed by the largely-Republican state. "I'd like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect, and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska," says Senator Lisa Murkowski.
