The government of Singapore has announced that it will hold a general election on September 11.

The People's Action Party (PAP) has been in power for 50 years. In the last election, held in 2011, it only received 60 percent of the total votes, though the country's complex election system let it gain 80 of the 87 seats in Parliament.

Experts suggest that this coming election may signal the end of PAP's rule.
