A retired senior Australian cleric, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, says that the Catholic Church failed to support abuse victims.

Bishop Robinson told a national inquiry panel, "I think that some popes gave out the wrong message... and some archbishops too." He added that "We still haven't had that kind of leadership, not even from [Pope] Francis."

Over 4,000 Australians have come forward and said that they were abused by clergy members.

Bishop Robinson was one of the people in charge of writing a response for the entire Australian Catholic Church to the scandal in the 1990s.
