At least two Ukrainian soldiers and several civilians were killed overnight in fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Clashes took place near the port of Mariupol in the southeast and at rebel-held Horlivka, just days before Ukraine is set to mark its Independence Day next week.

The clashes threaten to collapse an already tenuous ceasefire between the sides. The Ukrainian government has blamed rebels for shelling civilians in Mariupol, while Russia has blamed the renewed violence on Kiev.
