Rabbi Elio Toaff, formerly the Chief Rabbi of Rome, passed away Sunday at the age of 99, reported Kol Yisrael radio.
Rabbi Toaff, who served in his post between 1951 and 2002, greeted Pope John Paul II when he became the first pope to visit the Synagogue of Rome in 1986.
