Soon: ‘Civil Burials’ in All Cemeteries

The National Council for Planning and Construction, in conjunction with the Ministry of Religions established that any newly build or expanded cemetery will house an area for ‘civil burials,’ amounting to the size of 10 percent of the overall cemetery’s land.

The change will allow the implementation of the law regarding the right to layered burial from 1996 which established that “Man has the right to be buried according to his ideologies in an alternate cemetery is he should so choose.” A 1998 amendment to this law stated that an alternate civilian cemetery is cemetery where the burial is done according to the deceased’s ideologies and any man who passes near such an area is eligible for burial in those plots.
