Economics Committee OKs Authority Checking Competition

The Knesset Economics Committee cleared for second and third readings, Tuesday, a government bill to amend the antitrust law to allow the head of the Antitrust Authority to check the level of competition in various sectors of the economy. The examination of barriers to competition would be submitted to the Treasury and the sector's appropriate minister.

A representative of the Manufacturer's Association expressed the association's opposition to expanding the authority of the Antitrust Commissioner, saying the bill's clauses dealing with disclosure of the findings could hurt manufacturers and asking that clauses by added to allow a company a hearing, given the possibility of a heavy fine. Representatives of the Authority rejected the opposition, saying the points were covered.
