Health Minister to Press On with Surrogate-Mother Law

Health Minister Yael German said, Friday morning, "I felt they had stuck a knife in my back and heart when I heard about the appeal filed by Uri Ariel, the Housing Minister, against [my] surrogacy law." She noted that the appeal, following its narrow endorsement by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation, could "bury" the bill but said she would not give up promoting it, explaining, "I'm going to do everything that democracy and law allow to pass it."

German emphasized that before submitting the law to committee, she sat long hours with members of Ariel's Jewish Home party, "to locate the painful issues for them, to smooth over, to remove and add. It was clear they would vote against it, but it was also obvious after the adjustments we made that no appeal would be submitted."
