Monday's shooting at the AKIM organization's north Tel Aviv residence for the developmentally disabled was denounced on Tuesday by President Shim'on Peres and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon. Peres called the incident "sickening", adding that he didn't think that sort of thing could happen in Israel. He said the incident should not be allowed to pass, even if it was isolated, and it was good to hear that the residents of the facility were not intimidated.
Ya'alon shared Peres's use of the word "shameful" to describe the shooting, adding the word "ugly". He called on authorities to come down hard on the perpetrators, adding that the disabled shouldn't suffer just because they are "different".
Ahiah Kamara, who serves as Commissioner for Equal Rights for the Disabled, said the commission was working diligently to prevent a recurrence of the incident and offered cooperation with all authorities to promote the disabled community's access and integration.
