Chief Rabbi Asks MK Stern to Freeze Conversion Bill

Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi David Lau asked Member of Knesset Elazar Stern (Hatenua'), Thursday evening, to suspend efforts to pass his bill to streamline the process for converting to Judaism, pending coordination of the effort with the Chief Rabbinate.

The rabbinate issued a statement that everything possible must be done to improve services to converts but there is no compromising on the demands of halacha (Jewish law) regarding conversion. With the objection of the Rabbi Lau and Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yoseph to many clauses of the proposal, the statement cited the example of discretion given to unqualified bureaucrats, which would undermine the validity of conversions approved under the law as it is now formulated.
