Abbas: No "Eternal" Interim Agreements

Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority (PA) rejected, Thursday, the possibility of signing interim agreements with Israel. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, he said,  "We absolutely refuse to enter into a tailspin of interim arrangements that will become eternal." He continued, "The goal is to achieve a permanent agreement that will include all the core issues and allow us to declare an end to the conflict. The purpose of the talks is to achieve an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem."

Referring to the hostile Arab view that the creation of the modern Jewish state of Israel was a catastrophe (Nakba in Arabic), Abbas added, "The purpose of peace is to repair injustice that was caused to the Palestinians in the Nakba of 1948." He said that both Arabs and Israelis "will enjoy the fruits of peace."
