Petition Against A-G Involvement in Chief Rabbi Voting

Attorney Ephraim Damri of Tiberias submitted an urgent petition to the Supreme Court, Monday, in which he demanded that Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein be prevented from guiding members of the Committee to Select the Chief Rabbi on how to vote in the election of the Sephardic Chief Rabbi. The petition was filed in light of the state's response, Sunday, to a petition against the candidacy of Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu of Tzfat. From the response, it became apparent that Weinstein would directly contact committee members to discuss his finding of unspecified legal problems in Rabbi Eliyahu's candidacy over remarks attributed to Eliyahu, stating opposition to selling or renting property to Arabs.

Damri wants the court to rule that Weinstein's contact constitutes unacceptable intervention in a process in which he has no standing.
