Member of Knesset Fania Kirshenbaum announced, Friday morning, that the party supports Chairman David Stav of the Tzohar rabbinical organization to be the next Ashkenazic chief rabbi of Israel. Competing with Rabbi Stav for the position are Rabbi Ya'akov Shapiro, the son of the late former chief rabbi Avraham Shapiro, and Rabbi Eliezer Igra, a judge in the Great Rabbinical Court.
Kirshenbaum said, "Rabbi David Stav's life embodies a tie between Torah and work, between service to the people of Israel and learning and living according to the Torah of Israel." Referring to the Israel Defense Forces, she noted, "He himself served in the IDF and his children are serving in the IDF and national [volunteer] service. He and his family are busy on a daily basis in the promotion of Israeli society and the connection between its sectors. "
