To mark International Holocaust Memorial Day, the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial institution in Jerusalem opened a new exhibit in its archive building, entitled "Gathering the Fragments - Behind the Scenes of the Campaign to Rescue Personal Items from the Holocaust". The exhibit presents the collection, absorption and investigation process involved in the national project to save the items.
Chairman Avner Shalev of Yad Vashem said the exhibit represents only an example of more than 71,000 items donated by thousands of people over the last two years as a way of perpetuating the memory of relatives who perished during the Holocaust. A number of the items were donated by survivors who were invited to attend the opening. Shalev said, "We tried to highlight items whose stories are moving and significant, and have the power to explain a person's private story, as well as evidence added to the totality of testimonies that form the story of the Holocaust."
