Jordan: Violent Protests Over Rise in Gas Prices

Jordanian media reported on Tuesday that large demonstrations had taken place across the kingdom in protest of the government’s decision to raise fuel prices. In some places the demonstrations turned violent and Jordanian security forces had to increase their presence in these areas, the reports said.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of the government over its announcement that it would considerably raise the prices of various types of fuel in order to deal with the large deficit. Domestic gas price will rise by 53% and the price of fuel for cars will rise by 13%.
