Bennett Plan: Free Land for Those who Finish Service

Naftali Bennett, candidate for chairman of Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party) issued a "Zionist housing program" Monday morning, offering a free plot of land in the peripheral areas of the Negev and Galilee for those finishing national military or civilian service. The program, co-written by former housing minister and National Religious Party Chairman, Rabbi Yitzchak Levy, is based on what Bennett called the "amazing" fact that "Ninety-three percent of the land in Israel is in the hands of the state monopoly, and the time has come to free them and lower prices."

Bennett added, "With the help of this program, we can, at the same time, lower housing prices, encourage hareidim and Arabs to enlist in the army or... civilian service and strengthen the periphery in a massive way." He says it will be part of coalition negotiations with the next prime minister, although he said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu publicly supported the idea in 2005, when he was finance minister.
